What to Expect from Church Service

We know it can be intimidating to come to a new Church Service for the first time.

We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. Here’s a description of what you can expect when you come to Bethel Ministries.

When you arrive, enter through doors 3 or 4. A Greeter will meet you and hand you a bulletin, describing the progression of the Church Service. First time visitors are also given a welcome bag.

If you arrive early before service, please sign the guest book and browse any information we have in our Welcome Center. When you are ready, you may find a seat in the Sanctuary. Any open room is available.

The Service starts with the lighting of the Gospel and Epistle Candles on the Altar. The Pastor will perform a silent prayer and then welcome everyone to the morning’s Service. The Pastor will the Congregation to stand and read the Call To Worship, which is printed in the bulletin. The Pastor will then perform an Opening Prayer and invite the Congregation to sing the morning’s Opening Hymn.

The congregation will then sit, and an offering plate will be passed through the congregation for any monetary support they would like to give to the Church. No donation is expected, but it is very much appreciated, and, as followers of Jesus Christ, it is our responsibility to give back as a way of thanking God. Once the offering plates have been through all the pews, the ushers will bring the plates forward to the Pastor, and the congregation will stand and sing the Doxology:

“Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”

Following the Doxology, the Congregation will sit, and children may come forward for a children’s moment called “At His Knees”. This is a quick children’s lesson led by the Sunday School teacher. The children will then be lead out of the Sanctuary to have Sunday School while the service continues.

The Pastor will ask the Congregation if there are any concerns or joys for which they would like prayers, and the Pastor will offer a Prayer after all concerns have been raised.

After the prayer, the Congregation will stand for the reading of the day’s scripture, found in the bulletin or on the screen. After the scripture reading, the Pastor will say, “This in the Word of the Lord.” and the congregation will reply, “Thanks be to God”. The Pastor will then deliver the day’s sermon.

Before the end of the sermon, children will return to their parents from Sunday School.

After the sermon, the Pastor will invite everyone to stand for the closing hymn. Following the hymn, the acolytes will take the flames from the Altar candles as a symbol of taking Christ into the world, and the Congregation will be dismissed from the Sanctuary with a blessing.
